On Friday 19 September, the Italian Foreign Ministry hosted the first observance of the “Day of Italian Military Internees in German Concentration Camps during the Second World War”, established by Law No. 6 of 13 January 2025.
To mark the occasion, the Diplomatic Historical Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), in collaboration with National Association of Italian Prisoners, Internees and Veterans of the War of Liberation (ANRP), organised a documentary exhibition featuring materials from the GABAILG Collection (Office for the Assistance of Italian Workers in Germany) and objects from Museum of the Lives of the Italian Military Internees (IMI) in Via Labicana.
The exhibition was inaugurated following a conference opened by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, and attended by representatives of the ANRP, the Ministry of Defence, and several university scholars, who explored the main historical and diplomatic aspects of the events, particularly the negotiations between the Third Reich and the Italian Social Republic concerning the status of the Italian Military Internees (IMI).
