An enthusiastic audience in Santiago welcomed the performance of Ho paura torero (Tengo miedo torero) by the Piccolo Teatro di Milano.

The production, adapted from the eponymous novel by Chilean author Pedro Lemebel, was staged at the Teatro Nacional Chileno as part of the 33rd edition of the international Teatro a Mil festival—one of the highlights of Chile’s cultural calendar—thanks to the collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Santiago.

The play, which follows the fate of a couple of lovers in Pinochet’s Chile, is among Lemebel’s most cherished works. The author (1952–2015) is recognised as an icon of queer and camp literature in South America.

Claudio Longhi, Director of the Piccolo Teatro, and Lino Guanciale, playwright and actor—both prominent figures on the contemporary Italian theatre scene—also conducted a masterclass on the dramatic adaptation of the novel, discussing the stylistic and interpretative choices adopted to create a performance that remains faithful both to the original content and to the sensibility that inspired the author’s work.
