Vice Minister Marina Sereni had a video call today with the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Algeria, Rashid Bladehane.
Recalling the excellent state of bilateral relations between Italy and Algeria, Sereni and Bladehane agreed on the importance of relaunching political, economic and security cooperation through the organization of high-level meetings between their respective governments on matters of common interest, as soon as health conditions in the two countries allow it.
Algeria is a strategic commercial partner for Italy, which boasts a consolidated historical presence of large Italian companies in that country.
During the interview, great attention was paid to the Libya dossier. The Vice Minister, in full agreement with her interlocutor, underlined the strong commitment of our Government for a ceasefire and the resumption of the UN-led political dialogue, within the framework of what was established during the Berlin Conference last January. Sereni reiterated with his Algerian colleague the need to proceed as soon as possible with the appointment of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya. On the Algerian side, a clear sharing of Italian positions was highlighted, together with the determination to contribute proactively and participatory way to the search for a peaceful solution to the conflict in the neighbouring country. Stressing the importance of the European role, the Vice Minister recalled our Government’s convinced commitment to the Irini naval mission, of which Italy has taken command. In this regard, she reiterated that it “will be balanced, impartial and aimed exclusively at the respect of the embargo by everyone”.
