“The private sector can play an important global role as a proactive stakeholder, for a new development model leading to positive change” said the Deputy Foreign Minister Marina Sereni, by video link, at the United Nations’ Global Compact 20th Anniversary Leaders’ Summit. The Global Compact, an initiative created by the United Nations in 2000, is a global network participated by a multiplicity of players for encouraging businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable policies, within the framework of corporate social responsibility.
“The Italian Presidency of the G20 – Ms. Sereni continued – from next December, will tackle the issue of the impact of Covid-19 on our societies and economies, and will foster the most appropriate response for all fields. The recovery – the Deputy Minister added – should be based on a new approach towards green energy and transition, digital transformation, gender equality and, generally speaking, a fairer distribution of opportunities. People, the Planet and the prosperity of our economies should be at the core of this strategy, both domestic and European. The pillars of our action, against this backdrop, shall continue to be the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement. Regarding the COP XXVI, Italy will host the pre-COP and the “Youth4Climate Change” event targeting young people. “Although the success of the climate action depends on the inclusion of all the players involved in the growth processes, the decarbonisation of the economy and the transition towards renewable energy sources”.
“To this end – Ms. Sereni continued – we need to involve small and medium enterprises, which can play a leading role in an innovative business model. Gender equality too is a strong driver for the private sector. During the pandemic, in fact, the household and working conditions have worsened for many women. However, at the same time, women have provided an immediate and effective response to many of the challenges posed by the situation, thanks to their creativity and resources. The Global Compact, therefore, must continue to foster gender balance as a strong point for a successful business.”
This afternoon, the Summit will also feature a session organised by the Italian Local Network of the Global Compact Italia Foundation, in collaboration with the Global Compact Network Switzerland, aimed at supporting the reflection on the importance of placing sustainability at the core of the national strategies for making a fresh start and rebuilding the economy after Covid-19.
