“The system of safeguards guaranteed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, thanks to its multilateral, impartial and qualified nature, remains one of the central components of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and a fundamental assurance for our security”. This the statement of Vice Minister Marina Sereni, speaking by videoconference at the 64th General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“In this context, the joint statement issued by the IAEA and Iran, whose full and timely implementation we look forward to, is undoubtedly a positive step. At the same time, we remain deeply concerned about the serious difficulties that the Iranian Nuclear Agreement is still experiencing. For Italy, it is a key element for the global non-proliferation architecture and a successful example of multilateral diplomacy. Its full implementation is therefore fundamental for regional and international security. We, therefore, urge Iran to return to full implementation of its obligations without delay”.
“Likewise, we urge the People’s Republic of Korea to take concrete steps towards complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation. To this end, we, therefore, call on Pyongyang to start credible negotiations. In the meantime, the international sanctions regime must remain in force and be effectively implemented, supporting the negotiation process towards this goal”.
“Italy is a party to all major international conventions and actively supports the IAEA’s efforts in the field of nuclear safety and its central role in maintaining a safe global framework. Italy greatly appreciates the technical assistance and cooperation programs implemented by the Agency. It will renew in 2021 its total contribution to the Technical Cooperation Fund, amounting to almost €3 million. We appeal to all countries that have or intend to develop a nuclear program to adhere to the relevant international instruments in the field of nuclear safety and security”.
