This afternoon, Deputy Minister Manlio Di Stefano took part in the second Ministerial Council of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) that is part of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
“It is now extremely important”, said the Deputy Minister, “that we head towards gradual regulation of the digital sector, and especially in Artificial Intelligence research and applications, which can only happen at an international level.”
The GPAI, set up a year ago, is the only international organisation dedicated entirely to Artificial Intelligence, and it relies on the contribution of dozens of international experts and academics – including six Italians. They study practical applications for improving daily life in various fields, from medicine to services for citizens, as well as social media.
“The increased impetus we have seen in recent years in terms of IA research, means that many aspects of this sector need to be put into a more or less binding form. A forum like the GPAI is the best place for coordinating the efforts of many Countries, with the contribution of qualified experts, including many top notch Italian academics,” continued the Deputy Minister.“Italy is in the front line in promoting IA that is ever more sustainable, inclusive, and based on basic rights, and essential values and principles, which must be transferred into current and future new technologies.”
