The Diplomatic Historical Archive of the Farnesina collaborated on an episode of Paolo Mieli’s show “Passato e Presente” [Past and Present]. The episode, called “Italia Marocco. De Amicis alla corte del Sultano” [Italy and Morocco. De Amicis at the Court of the Sultan], will be broadcast on Friday, 11 March, at 1.15 p.m. on Rai Tre, and then again at 8.30 p.m. on Rai Storia, with the participation of Professor Luciano Monzali from the University of Bari Aldo Moro.

The guests will discuss with Paolo Mieli the diplomatic and cultural relations between Italy and Morocco, mainly focusing on the Italian Mission at the Court of the Sultan in 1875. The writer Edmondo De Amicis, who was present with the Italian Consul, kept a journalistic report of his travel experience which was then turned into a book.

The audience will be guided through the discovery of the documents stored in the Diplomatic Historical Archive of the Farnesina which bear testimony of the close network of political and trade relations between Italy and Morocco, from the first half of the 1800s to the very beginning of the diplomacy of the Kingdom of Sardinia, through the correspondence related to the rapid recognition of the Kingdom of Italy by the Sultan, to the international agreements that defined the new Italian foreign policy in the Mediterranean area at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the new 20th century.

The episode of “Passato e Presente” Italia Marocco. De Amicis alla corte del Sultano will be broadcast on 11 March at 1.15 p.m. on Rai Tre and then again at 8.30 p.m. on Rai Storia.
