ANNOUNCEMENT FOR EDITORS-IN-CHIEF – Conference “Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect: the UN Early Warning Mechanism” (Foreign Ministry Rome, 20 June 2013)

The conference “Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect: the UN Early Warning Mechanism” will be held in the Foreign Ministry’s Sala Aldo Moro on Thursday 20 June 2013 at 16.30, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the collaboration of ISPI.


Deputy Minister Lapo Pistelli will open the conference, whose moderator will be Prof. Pietro Petito of the University of Sussex; UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng will introduce the alarm mechanism for the prevention of mass atrocities and crimes against humanity proposed during the event “The Civil Society and the Education on Human Rights as a tool forpromoting religious tolerance” organised by Italy last September in the margins of the 67th UN General Assembly.


The conference will examine the practical aspects of the concept known as the ‘responsibility to protect’, and Italy’s main collaborative initiatives with the United Nations in this sector will be outlined; a debate is to follow that will be open to questions from the public.
