The “Human Corridors” Resettlement Programme, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of the Interior, the Comunita di Sant’Egidio, and the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy and the Waldensian Board, is dealing with the arrival of 75 refugees from Lebanon. They are due to arrive at Rome’s Fiumicino airport on Monday, 24 October, and another group of 53 refugees will arrive on Tuesday.
They join the 279, mainly Syrians coming via Lebanon, who have reached Italy in the past few months.
The programme is a pilot project in the framework of an agreement signed in mid-December by the Italian government, the Comunita di Sant’Egidio, the Federation of the Evangelical Churches in Italy and the Waldensian Board. It aims to help approximately 1,000 refugees and vulnerable people, from Morocco, Lebanon and Ethiopia, to arrive in Italy over the next two years.
Members of the press interested in attending the press conference on Monday, 24 October at 11 a.m. with the refugees’ families, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni, with the Deputy Mnister of the Interior Filippo Bubbico, the founder of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio Professor Andrea Riccardi, the President of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy, Pastor Luca Maria Negro, and Susanna Pietra, director of the Ufficio Otto per Mille of the Waldensian Church, should go to Terminal 5, in Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, by 10 a.m.
