On 21 and 22 April the Farnesina will host the third edition of the Conference on Sustainable Development Goal 16, organised by the Italian Government alongside UN DESA (United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs) and IDLO (International Development Law Organisation), named “Towards a people-centred governance in a post-pandemic world”.
The Conference, to be held in a hybrid mode, will feature a multistakeholder format, involving those working at the forefront of pandemic response and recovery efforts at a global level. It will be attended by experts from governments, the United Nations system and other international organisations, think tanks, universities, civil society and private sector organisations, and other relevant stakeholders.
It will be possible to attend the event either in person or follow the live stream by signing up on Zoom at the following link https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GXe5kpWfTs6rzu8i07hHng.
On Thursday 21 April, at 2:00 p.m., Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Marina Sereni, will chair the opening session of the Conference, to include remarks by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Collen Vixen Kelapile, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs, Liu Zhenmin, and the Director General of IDLO, Jan Beagle.
Following the results of the previous editions, held in 2019 and 2021, and in view of the fact that governance has been identified as a pivotal element for the transformations required to achieve all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the event hosted by the Farnesina aims to promote a people-centred approach to governance, firmly believing this can help rebuild confidence, speed up the process towards sustainable development and overcome the challenges of a post-pandemic world.
The Conference will address the following topics: preventing conflicts and supporting peace in an increasingly fragile world; building institutional resilience and enhancing institution efficiency, accountability and response; a new vision of rule of law to face global challenges; leave no-one behind: ensure inclusion, protection and participation. The participants will be asked to share their experiences, best practices and success stories related to governance innovation, which have emerged during the pandemic; they will also discuss policies and partnerships closely linked to the targets and goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda.
