Inaugural Assembly of the new General Council of Italians Abroad

Rome, 19 – 23 June 2023

From 19 to 23 June 2023, the inaugural assembly of the new CGIE – General Council of Italians Abroad – will be held at the International Conference Hall of the Farnesina.

The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, will address the CGIE Plenary Assembly on Friday 23 June at 12:00 a.m. The speech will be streamed live on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Youtube channel and open to the participation of the press.

Instead, the Plenary Assembly will be opened on 19 June at 10:00 a.m. by Undersecretary Giorgio Silli and the CGIE’s most senior member.

The General Council of Italians Abroad is the advisory body to the Italian Government and Parliament on major issues of interest to Italians abroad and meets at least once a year. Among its many functions, the CGIE aims at promoting and facilitating the development of the living conditions of Italian communities abroad and strengthening their connection with Italy, as well as ensuring the most effective protection of the rights of Italians abroad, facilitating the maintenance of their cultural and linguistic identity and promoting their economic and commercial initiatives. Comprising 63 members, 20 of whom are appointed by the government and 43 elected to represent Italian communities, the CGIE is chaired by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The opening address by Undersecretary Silli and the closing address by Minister Tajani will be streamed live on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs YouTube channel. Journalists and camera operators interested in attending the opening sessions on Monday 19 (10:00 – 11:15 a.m.) and the closing session on Friday 23 (12:00 – 2:00 p.m.) may apply for accreditation by sending a request by Friday 16 June at 4:00 p.m., specifying the relevant session, to accreditamentostampa@esteri.it (Tel. 06 3691 3432 -3078, 8210 or 8573), as follows:

For representatives of Italian press organisations:

  • copy of an identity document
  • letter of assignment from the newspaper of affiliation or – in the absence of the latter – copy of professional identity card.

For representatives of foreign press organisations, not accredited at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

  • copy of an identity document;
  • letter from the newspaper of affiliation;
  • Verbal note of the Embassy in Rome of the country of the press organisation represented (only if not already sent previously).

For representatives of foreign press already accredited at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the request must be sent with a copy of an identity document attached.

Accredited journalists, photographers and cameramen may enter the Farnesina from the main entrance, left side:

Monday 19 June from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.;

Friday, 23 June from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
