PRESS ACCREDITATION NOTE
States-General on the Italian Language in the World – Towards a Global Italian-speaking Community
(MAXXI Auditorium, 16 April 2025)
On Wednesday, 16 April 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the States-General on the Italian Language in the World will take place at the Auditorium of the National Museum of 21st century Arts (MAXXI) in Rome. This is the main event dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language globally.
The proceedings will open with the reading of a message from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, followed by the inauguration of the event by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani. Further contributions will follow from the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, and the President of the Dante Alighieri Society, Andrea Riccardi.
The event will also feature testimonies from renowned authors: Edith Bruck, a Hungarian-born Italian writer, poet, and Holocaust survivor, and Jhumpa Lahiri, an American author who, out of love and dedication to the Italian language, has chosen to write her literary works in Italian. Contributions will also come from representatives of academia, business, civil society, and from students of the United World College of the Adriatic (Duino), who will reflect on the Italian language as a tool for peace and dialogue among peoples.
The event will conclude at 11:30 a.m. with the closing remarks by the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, who will formally announce the adoption of the Final Declaration of the 2025 States-General on the Italian Language in the World.
The event, organised on the initiative of Minister Antonio Tajani, will represent a key moment of dialogue between institutions and civil society, with the goal of establishing a “Community of Italian-speaking Nations” ahead of the International Conference on Italian Language and Culture to be held in autumn.
