70th Anniversary of the Messina-Taormina Conference
(Messina-Taormina, 18-19 June 2025)
On 18 and 19 June 2025, the celebratory event for the 70th Anniversary of the Messina-Taormina Conference will take place, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Sicilian Region, the Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation, the municipalities of Messina and Taormina, and the Taobuk Festival.
The event will commemorate the initiative of 3 June 1955, which led to the “Messina Resolution”: a set of principles and intentions defined by the six founding countries aimed at the creation of the European Atomic Energy Community and what would become, with the signing of the Treaties of Rome in 1957, the European Common Market.
The programme of the two-day event will open on 18 June at 3:00 p.m. with a ceremony at Palazzo Zanca in Messina, attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, the Mayors of Taormina and Messina, Cateno De Luca and Federico Basile respectively, along with representatives from the EU Trio Presidencies (Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus) and the founding countries that signed the political declaration of the 1955 Conference (Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg).
The programme will continue at 7:00 p.m. at the Ancient Theatre of Taormina with a concert by the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, an event that will mark the official gathering of the authorities and representatives from all 27 EU Member States as well as the invited candidate and potential candidate countries, in the presence of the Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.
On the morning of Thursday 19 June, the proceedings will begin with the Ministerial Meeting chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani. All attending delegations will take part in this meeting, with the aim of reaffirming the shared commitment to the European project, also in light of future enlargement.
