Agreement between Italy and Jordan on University Cooperation

Italy and Jordan signed an agreement today in Amman that is considered a milestone in bilateral university cooperation between the two Countries. It is a field that features an increasing number of projects and initiatives between Italian and Jordanian universities. The agreement, which replaces the previous bilateral memorandum of 2005 on the subject, was signed by the Jordanian Minister of Higher Education, Adel Tweissi, and the Italian Ambassador to Amman, Giovanni Brauzzi. The Minister reiterated his deep interest in increasing opportunities for study and university exchanges, as well as his appreciation for the significant increase in scholarships awarded by the Italian government. The ceremony was also attended by some Jordanian students who were awarded scholarships for the academic year 2018-2019. They will be able to enroll or continue their studies at Italian universities, which have always been a benchmark for young people interested in completing their higher education.

A delegation from the University of Pisa was also at the signing. They are on a mission to Jordan for a project that aims to optimize the use of water in agriculture in the Mediterranean regions with higher water vulnerability, establishing an interdepartmental planning group “Water, Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Energy”. The group will involve some prestigious Jordanian scientific institutions such as the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), the Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST), the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) of Baaqa, the Jordan University for Science and Technology (JUST) of Irbid and SESAME. The initiative is a sign of the increasing involvement of Italian universities in these issues, which are vital for the future of the Middle East.
