Myanmar: Joint Peace Fund, the six-month Italian Chairmanship has ended

“After six months of Chairmanship, I believe that Italy has given clear direction on the Joint Peace Fund, outlining a straightforward and efficient path for all future initiatives,” said the Ambassador of Italy Pier Giorgio Aliberti on the occasion of the end of the six-month Italian Chairmanship of the Joint Peace Fund (JPF). It is a multi-donor fund that counts, among others, the United States, Japan and the European Union, with the fund estab;ished to support the peace process in Myanmar. During the last six months, in particular, the Italian activity focused on rationalising the resources available, on broadening the portfolio of the initiatives funded (actually 22 for a total amount of US$ 11 million) and on strengthening the relations with all of the key actors involved in the process, including governmental institutions and ethnic groups. This increased the visibility of the interventions and consolidated the JPF’s role as a reliable and impartial interlocutor in the complex and ongoing process of national reconciliation in Myanmar.
