United Arab Emirates: Italian Cultural Institute kicks off with the Italian Cinema Week

The activities of the Italian Cultural Institute in Abu Dhabi kicked off with the Italian Cinema Week. The works of Italian contemporary masters and talented young directors will be screened in a dense billboard on programme at the Akil Cinema in Dubai and at the Manarat al Saadiyat Cinema in Abu Dhabi.

The first screening will include Paolo Sorrentino’s film ‘One Man Up’ (‘L’uomo in più’), ‘Reality’ by Matteo Garrone, winner of the Cannes Jury Prize, ‘Italian Race’ (‘Veloce come il vento’) by Matteo Rovere, ‘They Call me Jeeg’ (‘Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot’) by Gabriele Minetti, and ‘Nico’ by Susanna Nicchiarelli. The second screening will include ‘Holding Hands’ (‘La Tenerezza’) by Gianni Amelio and ‘Loose Cannons’ (‘Mine vaganti’) by Fernan Ozpetek, a film following in the steps of Italian-style comedy.

Moreover, an immersion in Italy’s historical film-making, in cooperation with the Cinema Museum of Turin, will present two restored silent films: ‘Cabiria’ (1914) and ‘Tigre reale’ (1916). Both screenings will be accompanied by live music: the former by the improvisations on the piano by Stefano Maccagno, and the latter by the Silent Movie Ensemble string quartet with Furio de Castro at the double bass.
