Tirana 1989-2019, an art project on the city’s changes

The changes witnessed by Tirana during the last 30 years through the look of an Italian artist and of young people raised in post-Socialist Albania. This is the essence of Eugenio Tibaldi’s ’30 Years Old’ project realised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Tirana in partnership with the University of Arts and the Harabel Contemporary Art Platform.

Until 31 March, the University’s FAB Gallery will host the exhibition that originated from Tibaldi’s first visit to Albania last October. The artist, who in these past few years has worked in Istanbul, Cairo, Rome, Thessaloniki, Berlin, Verona, Bucharest, Turin, Caracas and Brussels, shared his method with the young Albanian artists who responded to an open call. Working on a common theme, the participants in the project walked, photographed, chatted, analysed, organised and produced works reflecting on the changes that Tirana has experienced since 1989. The city’s architectural peculiarities divide the overall setting, revealing imperfections, folds and nuances in a series of minor su-narratives that, as Tibaldi suggests, become contributory elements capable of telling the story of change.
