The Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria presents Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now – Chapter Two, a virtual exhibition that will be open from 28 May to 28 July 2020.
The project, which investigates the relationship between man and the universe, with a complete presentation exhibition (consisting of three chapters) already scheduled and to be redefined due to the pandemic, presents here the second chapter in a virtual way. Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now, the project/archive by the artists Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler shows, in this second part, reflections on man’s attempt to move through time and matter, bringing these elements, now in an even more articulated way, to Afrikaans science fiction novels. The two books most cited in this chapter, Black Star Over Karoo (1957) by Jan Rabie, and Loeloeraai (1923) by C.J. Langenhoven, between worlds to be safeguarded and aliens to relate to, echo in the present “infecting” our interpretation of reality.
