The Italian Cultural Institute of Algiers has collaborated in the organisation of an online masterclass on film criticism, scheduled from 12 to 16 September 2021 and aimed at students and professionals of Algerian cinema.
The event is part of online meetings on film criticism entitled “Jil Cilima” (from 11 to 18 September 2021) organised by the network of National Cultural Institutes of the European Union (Eunic) of which the Algiers IIC is a member. The “Jil Cilima” event has the support of the Ministry of Culture and Arts and is implemented in partnership with the National Centre for Cinematography and Audiovisual (CNCA) and the Algerian Centre for Film Development (CADC).
The programme of the IIC event focuses on film “grammar”, from theory to practice; the tutor is Swiss-Italian film director and programmer Valentina Manzoni (12-15 September). Italian journalist and professor Andrea Chimento will take part in the conversation animated by Ian Haydn Smith, Helena Lindblad and Pere Ortin Andres with the participation of Nabil Hadji, Ghania Seddik and Nabila Rezaig (14 September) and Yassmine Chouikh, Abdelkader Djeriou and Driffa Mezner (16 September).
The aim of this workshop is to analyse the tools useful for a careful and in-depth reading of cinema, by projecting images and sequences extracted from various contemporary Italian films, illustrating the fundamentals of current film criticism.
Through a reflection on the meaning of film criticism today, various models for evaluating a film will be commented on, in order to understand how to interpret it and develop a critique.
