After a one-year break due to the pandemic, activities in Georgia by the Italian archaeological team of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice have resumed for the annual campaign of the “Lagodekhi Georgian-Italian Archaeological Project”, organised in collaboration with the Lagodekhi Museum. The expedition is financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Ca’ Foscari University.
Field activities started on 29 August and will continue until 25 October. The archaeological mission plans to continue investigations into the fascinating origins of the Tsiteli Gorebi settlement (dating back to the ‘Chalcolithic’ period, 5000-4800 BC). Such investigations have yielded fascinating results also due to the use of geomagnetic survey instruments. Furthermore, excavations of the site have just begun. Other archaeological reconnaissance and geo-archaeological research activities are underway in the Lagodekhi area, as well as the study of archaeological materials in local museums. Among the activities of the archaeological team is strengthening education in this context, which is being pursued through introductory archaeological lessons given to young local students.
