“Still Voices”, a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the Italian-Albanian artist Adrian Paci, will be opening on 11 February 2022 at Haifa Museum of Art. The exhibition will be open to visitors until 25 June. Organised in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa, the show provides a comprehensive view of Paci’s video installations, starting from his early works in 1997.
The exhibition hinges around “Broken Words”, a five-strand installation portraying five refugees interviewed by Paci near Beirut after fleeing the war in Syria. The installation tells the stories of the five characters in Arabic. Paci altered each video to show only the moments when the refugees stop talking, thus creating a disconnect between what you see and what you hear. The refugees’ voices are mixed to create a choral cacophony, making it difficult to understand the words of the story. It’s impossible to listen to the refugees’ stories but you can read them in their faces, through the emotions they convey.
Adrian Paci was born in Shkodër, Albania, in 1969 and emigrated to Italy in 1997. A prominent figure in the contemporary art scene for over two decades, Paci reflects and comments on current political and social upheavals with sensitivity and a uniquely humane voice.
