A bicycle ride along the most important buildings and monuments associated with Italian history or architecture concluded the exhibition, “Montevideo. A capital of Italian culture”, held in Uruguay’s capital, on 5 April. The initiative, organised by the Italian Embassy and by the Italian Cultural Institute in Montevideo, further consolidated the ties with Italy of a community of fellow nationals who emigrated a long time ago and gave strong added value to the initiatives thought up within the context promoting the national economic system.

“It is a great satisfaction to celebrate the closure of the exhibition with this route that allowed us to discover, in a recreational and amusing way, a part of Italy’s heritage in Montevideo, a capital of Italian culture”, Ambassador Giovanni Battista Iannuzzi said.

The exhibition featured a number of events focusing on the image of Italy, including a conference on Italy’s presence in the street and road names of Montevideo and a conference (“Anita Garibaldi between history and myth”) celebrating the bicentennial of Anita Garibaldi’s birth; a seminar on “Italy and wine: excellence and sustainability models in wine-making and viticulture”. And still: the publication of the book “Los platos favoritos y recetas tradicionales de Linda Olivetti de Kohen”, which gathers drawing and family tradition recipes of the renowned Italian artist who emigrated to Uruguay; a photography contest, “Arquitecturas eclecticas”; a concert (“Italia de Pelicula”) paying homage to Maestro Ennio Morricone, organised alongside the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo; and an exhibition, “Beyond the border. Italian migration experiences”, which gathered the testimonies and historic material of Italians who emigrated to Uruguay.
