Italy will be the guest of honour at the XXVII edition of “Svět knihy – Book World Prague”, the Czech Republic’s fair dedicated to international publishing and literature, to be staged in Prague from 9 to 12 June. With the support of the Italian Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Trade Agency, CAMIC (the Italian-Czech Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the Italian Publishers’ Association, and as part of the beIT “nation branding” campaign, the Italian participation proposes a rich agenda, inspired by high-profile authors and works.

In particular, two new translations of works by Italo Calvino will be presented: “Palomar” and “Le Cosicomiche”. Italian literature classics will also include Elsa Morante, with the presentation of the first Czech translation of “L’Isola di Arturo”. A number of prestigious Italian authors will participate, including Donatella Di Pietrantonio, Viola Ardone, Stefania Auci (who will present the Czech translation of her book “L’inverno dei leoni”), Claudia Durastanti, Gianfranco Calligarich.

The choice of Italy as the guest of honour also intends to mark an important anniversary for the Italian Cultural Institute, which has been operating in Prague for a good 100 years: a century of cooperation that confirms the enduring and constantly fervent cultural relations between the two countries. The current edition also celebrates the 90th anniversary of the birth of world-renowned novelist, essayist and semiologist Umberto Eco. Indeed, the Book Fair has chosen one of his quotes from “The Name of the Rose” as the motto for this year’s edition: “We live for books. A sweet mission in this world dominated by disorder and decay”.
