As part of the Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism 2022, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai have announced an important exhibition focusing on self-portraits by celebrated artists. The exhibition, “Uffizi Self-portrait Masterpieces”, was organised in collaboration with the Bund One Art Museum and the Gallerie degli Uffizi and will be open to visitors from 9 September 2022 until 8 January 2023.

“Uffizi Self-portrait Masterpieces” will display 50 rare works of undoubted historic value, dating from the 16th to the 21st centuries. From the renaissance to baroque, and taking in neo-classicism, romanticism and contemporary art, the exhibition encompasses five centuries of the history of the self-portrait by some of the greatest names in art history: starting with Raphael and moving on to Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Jacques Louis David, Ingres, Chagall, Morandi, Yayoi Kusama and Cai Guoqiang.

The show will give visitors insights into the ideas and individual techniques hidden behind each self-portrait, and an opportunity to discover the artists’ state of mind as they each created their own.
