The workshop “Travelling in the Fashion World”, the first event held in Baghdad to celebrate the creativity of sustainable Italian design on the occasion of the Italian Design Day 2023, was held at “The Station” centre.

The workshop, which was attended by over 60 people including professors and students from the Baghdad Institute of Applied Arts, industry professionals and young people with aspirations in the fashion world, was enhanced by Prof. Carmen Alampi from the Istituto Marangoni in Florence. The central theme of the initiative was “upcycling”, i.e. the creative recycling of clothes, fabrics and materials to be given a new life according to contemporary fashion trends. An alternative to “disposable” items and a way of doing design in an original, sustainable and planet-friendly way.

Ambassador Greganti said: “For the first edition of the Italian Design Day in Baghdad, the energy of design brought all the freshness, ingenuity and excellence of Italian fashion craftsmanship, with an eye to eco-sustainable solutions, care for the planet and the opportunities for economic development they offer. The students fully achieved the course’s objective, making dresses from curtains, necklaces from ties, veils and turbans from old shirts and bringing home fabrics and objects to regenerate. The creations were numerous and of a very high standard, not to mention the great enthusiasm of the participants and of Prof. Alampi herself, whom I heartily thank for all her commitment, dedication and professionalism. The goal is  to organise a second course, at an advanced level, to help develop the incredible potential of these young people”.

The event also enabled a cultural and artistic exchange between Italy and Iraq, underlining the importance of art, culture and design as a tool to unite different peoples and cultures.
