The Italian Embassy in Dakar organised a scientific seminar entitled “The contribution of hydrogeology to sustainable water management”, which was attended by representatives of research institutions and universities from Senegal and the University of Bologna. The event provided an opportunity to share experiences, knowledge and resources in the field of hydrogeology, the distribution and movement of water within the soils and rocks of the earth’s crust.

The event was held at the Centre de Suivi Ecologique, a facility specialising in environmental monitoring and sustainable management of the country’s natural resources, and was attended by almost 40 participants including researchers, professors and students from Cheikh Anta Diop University and Amadou Mahtar Mbow University, both in Dakar.

In bringing greetings from the Italian Ambassador to Dakar, Giovanni Umberto De Vito, the Embassy’s Scientific Attaché, Eugenio Cavallo, recalled Italy’s strong desire to promote mutual understanding between Italian and West African scientific institutions and to foster the integration of research, innovation and higher education systems. During the seminar, Prof. Luigi Cantelli reported on the educational and research activities and opportunities for collaboration with the University of Bologna in the field of hydrogeology. Beatrice Giambastiani illustrated a two-year project to monitor and identify techniques for the management and use of surface and groundwater conducted in Senegal, in the Kaffrine area, in the centre of the country, financed directly by the University of Bologna and implemented with the support of the NGO COMI.
