The Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, met the Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, with the aim of strengthening collaboration with the American capital in all sectors.
The Ambassador and the Mayor noted the excellent level of cultural collaboration, agreeing on the advisability to further strengthen the teaching of the Italian language, already included in the curricula of six public schools in the city, and to evaluate joint initiatives for sport promotion. In 2023 alone, the city hosted major Italian exhibitions, such as those of Canova at the National Gallery of Art, of Leonardo’s paintings at the Martin Luther King Library and of De Nittis at the Phillips Collection, reviewed by the Washington Post among the 10 most important exhibitions of the year.
The conversation focused also on economic collaboration, fostered by the direct air connections of ITA Airways and United, which are being strengthened, and also conducive to increasing tourist flows to our country. In the economic field, the investment in the Hitachi Rail area (formerly Ansaldo Breda) for the supply of new Washington Metro cars is particularly significant.
The Ambassador and the Mayor discussed further collaborations in various sectors, including agri-food, and the strengthening of the link between the two capitals.
