The “LAVINIA” art exhibition, promoted by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the DIFC in Dubai, was inaugurated in Abu Dhabi at The Gate at DIFC – West Lobby.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public until 30 March, was put together by a team of international curators led by Alejandra Castro Rioseco with special co-curator Matteo Sormani. Featuring an ensemble of female artistic voices, it transports the audience to the Italian Baroque period of 16th century (or late Mannerism), displaying works exclusively by women artists.
In particular, the exhibition is inspired by the work of the famous and iconic Mannerist painter Lavinia Fontana, who produced over 125 artworks, of which only 34 bearing her original signature have been recovered. Lavinia Fontana’s work will provide a guiding theme for the exhibition, featuring four up-and-coming Italian artists – Anna Botticini from Brescia, Mara Fabbro from Castello d’Aviano in Friuli, Isadora Capraro from Vercelli and Silvia Giordani from Vicenza – who were invited to exhibit works on the same theme and technique, offering a new perspective on the Baroque era.
