On 18 February 2025, Italy organised an event in New York titled “Quantum Technology and Cybersecurity: Opportunities and Challenges,” on the occasion of the tenth session of the United Nations Working Group on Information and Communication Technology Security.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is at the forefront of promoting strong international action to safeguard global security, including in the strategic sector of new technologies. With the increasing integration of digital systems into everyday life, cybersecurity is a key priority for governments, industries, and individuals alike. Furthermore, the advent of quantum technology presents significant opportunities but also formidable challenges, with implications for cybersecurity that require the utmost attention from the international community. The United Nations has proclaimed 2025 as the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology”.
The event, organised by the Italian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was opened by Italy’s Permanent Representative, Amb. Maurizio Massari, followed by contributions from experts from the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN), the UN Office for Science, Technology, and International Security Unit, and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). The discussion was moderated by Diego Brasioli, the Special Envoy for Cybersecurity of Minister Tajani and Head of the Technological Innovation Unit at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting was co-organised with Ghana, reflecting Italy’s commitment to working with African nations as part of the Mattei Plan partnership to jointly address the growing challenges of the digital space.
