Metternich Palace, home of the Italian Embassy in Vienna, hosted a prestigious science diplomacy event dedicated to the topic of gravitational waves and the European “Einstein Telescope” project, a future research infrastructure for observing the universe.

The meeting, organized as a side event of the International School of Astroparticle Physics (ISAPP2025), featured Prof. Marco Pallavicini, Vice President of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), who illustrated to the audience the scientific and strategic value of the Einstein Telescope and the potential joint role of Italy and Austria in developing the project.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Giovanni Pugliese emphasized that Europe’s major scientific infrastructure represents not only excellence in research but is also a key instrument of multilateral diplomacy. Through cooperation between countries, it strengthens international dialogue, promotes knowledge sharing, and contributes to building a more united and innovative Europe.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Austrian Academy of Sciences (organizing ISAPP2025) and with the valuable support of the Association for Scientific Exchanges Austria-Italy (ASSAI), founded a year ago with the aim of promoting bilateral scientific collaboration.

The initiative involved many young researchers from around the world present in Vienna for ISAPP2025, as well as representatives of the Austrian Ministry of Research, academia, business, and diplomacy.
