In May 2015 Japan will host the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci and the Battle of Anghiari – The Mystery of the Tavola Doria”, organized by the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum.

The press conference for the presentation was held recently in Tokyo in the presence of, among others, Italian ambassador Domenico Giorgi. The Tavola Doria, a 16th century panel painting of a detail of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous fresco of the Battle of Anghiari in Florence’s the Palazzo Vecchio, unfortunately lost, will be displayed for the first time in Japan within the framework of an agreement signed in 2012 between the museum and the Italian government.
The exhibition will move on to Kyoto for the 50th anniversary of the city’s twinning with Florence, and then to Sendai, city symbolic of the calamity that hit Tohoku in March 2011. Speaking at the presentation, Giorgi underscored the “excellent collaboration” between Italy and the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum in handling the loan of the artwork which, before being displayed in Japan will return to Italy for an exhibition on Leonardo in Milan for the 2015 EXPO. A total of 60 works from various Italian museums will be included, as well as from foreign museums including the Louvre and the collection of the Count of Leicester.
