Under-Secretary Giro attended the ceremony for the closing of an Italian programme of support for a regional security strategy for emergency response to organised crime.
“Italy offered Central America its experience in fighting organised crime. The battle is a global one that is confronted through investigation, confiscation and greater regional integration”, the Under-Secretary stated.
Availing itself of the expertise of the Antimafia Investigative Directorate, with the contribution of current President of the Senate Pietro Grassi, Italy trained 160 operatives from area countries – thus also contributing to regional collaboration – and facilitated the drafting of a regional convention on the confiscation of illegal assets.
“We can draw a positive intermediate assessment of this cooperative effort; now it is necessary to strengthen regional judicial cooperation and legislative harmonisation within the framework of a broader-based social programme”, Giro concluded.
