Foreign Ministry Note – Case of the Italian citizen detained in Sudan

From the outset, the Italian Embassy in Sudan, liaising closely with the Foreign Ministry, has followed the case of an Italian citizen detained in Khartoum on charges of fraud against Sudanese companies. Since 1 April, in fact, he has received no less than 58 consular visits from Embassy staff, which continue at least twice a week. As part of its consular assistance activities, the Embassy has provided him with food, clothing, linen, books and other necessary items.

On a political and judicial level, the Italian Embassy in Khartoum has officially intervened with the political and institutional Authorities in Sudan, including the Office of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, strongly requesting the full respect of the detained citizen’s rights, in terms of health, safety and protection, and a rapid solution to the case.

Moreover, today, Vice Minister Marina Sereni held a telephone conversation with the Sudanese Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, entirely focused on this case.
