Name Directorate General for Political Affairs and International Security
Competenze The Directorate General for Political Affairs and International Security is responsible for the following tasks:
a) ensures the analysis, definition, and unity of diplomatic action in bilateral and multilateral relations;
b) tackles issues related to international security, including – in coordination with the Directorate-General for Europe and International Trade Policy and to ensure unity of action – those of the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy, as well as issues relating to the Atlantic Alliance, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Council of Europe, disarmament and arms control, and non-proliferation;
c) addresses political issues within the remit of the United Nations system;
d) handles, in coordination with the other Directorates-General concerned, human rights issues;
e) ensures international cooperation against global threats, particularly terrorism, transnational organized crime, and drug trafficking;
f) manages, in consultation with the relevant Directorates-General, negotiations for the definition of international sanctions regimes, without prejudice to the powers of the Unit referred to in Article 7-bis of Law No. 185 of July 9, 1990;
g) manages the Ministry’s activities regarding the prohibition of chemical weapons, without prejudice to the powers of the Unit referred to in Article 7-bis of Law No. 185 of July 9, 1990;
h) follows issues related to the G8/G20 processes;
i) conducts research and studies on international relations, in collaboration with the other Directorates-General, with the relevant public administrations, as well as with academia and civil society; develops analyses and proposals for strategic foreign policy lines;
l) promotes public debate, training, and research on international relations;
m) maintains the historical archives and library, promoting their updating and enhancement;
n) promotes Italy’s presence in international organizations;
o) ensures the timely and effective handling of issues related to crisis areas;
p) promotes, in agreement with the other competent Directorates-General,bilateral relations of a political, economic, cultural, and other nature; conducts related negotiations, and is responsible for analysing, defining, and implementing diplomatic action with North American countries, the Russian Federation, Eastern European countries that are not members of the European Union, the Caucasus, Central and Central-Western Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East, subject to any changes that may be made with respect to individual countries or groups of countries identified by Ministerial decree;q) ensures Italy’s participation in the activities of regional international cooperation and organizations relating to the geographical areas referred to in point  p);
