The United States and Canada together account for over 28% of global nominal GDP, with the United States accounting for 26.2%, the largest single country share of global output.
Italy is represented in the United States and Canada by an extensive diplomatic and consular network, comprising 79 offices (2 embassies, 69 consulates, including honorary consulates, and 8 cultural institutes). This strong and widespread presence is also driven by the desire to best serve the large and practive communities of Italian origin in both countries (17.7 million in the USA and 1.6 million in Canada). The year 2022 marked the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic relations with Canada, while 2021 marked the 160th anniversary of Italy-US diplomatic relations.
Italy collaborates with the United States and Canada within many multilateral organizations and forums, and is a key player in the European Union’s bilateral cooperation with each of the two countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation promotes further strengthening of the excellent partnership with the United States and Canada, rooted in a shared framework of principles and values inherent in our shared Western tradition. The aim is to jointly address global challenges in all shared forums, starting with our common NATO’s membership, to continue to ensure the prosperity and security of the Transatlantic Community.
