Italy vaunts a widespread presence of United Nations agencies throughout the national territory that was built over the decades and addresses a wide range of sectors of activity. Rome is the seat of the FAO, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, of the World Food Programme (WFP) and of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Mention should also be made of the presence in Brindisi of the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) and of the UN Logistics Base in Brindisi that – as “Global Service Centre” – has the task of providing support in the deployment of peacekeeping operations, including in the information technology and telecommunication sectors, and is emerging as a structure of excellence and innovation for managing the environmental impact of the UN operations.
Mention should also be made of the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) in Turin, the training centre offering courses for United Nations’ staff members and for the personnel of UN Partner Countries.
Up to 2003, the UN had an Information Office in Italy (and in eight more European Countries – Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland) that provided information on the activities and actions of the United Nations through information material, reports and documents released by the United Nations and also through communication campaigns. After the UN’s Information Offices in Europe were reorganised in 2004, a single United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) was established in Brussels to provide communication and information services on the United Nations Organization to all European countries.
The presence of the United Nations in Italy constitutes a significant value added. It is worth preserving, consolidating and enhancing not only for evident political reasons (international prestige, visibility, and the possibility of contributing to decision-making mechanisms) but also as a growth factor capable of assuring a positive fallout on the economy (on the supply chain and orders) as well as on the socio-cultural context (opening up and internationalising civil society and the world of academia and research, etc.).

The UNHCR’s Rome Office deals with the protection of refugees, and displaced and stateless persons. In particular, with the status of observer without the right to vote, it sits on the National Commission for the Right to Asylum and is a full member of 10 Local Commissions in charge of examining asylum requests and participates in the process to determine the status of refugee in Italy. It also performs activities relative to international protection, education and training, the dissemination of information on refugees and asylum seekers in Italy and in the different crisis areas around the world, and to raising public awareness and promoting fundraising activities with Governments, companies and private individuals.
In 2006, the Italian Office of the UNHCR expanded its competences and became the Regional Representation for Southern Europe with jurisdiction, in addition to Italy, over Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, the Holy See and, as of 2009, also over Albania, with the role of coordinator of regional activities focused on asylum seekers and refugees in these Countries.

The United Nations Logistics Base has been present in Brindisi since the mid-1990s. Initially used as a depot for the material no longer used by the UNPROFOR mission in the former Yugoslavia, the Base has expanded its functions over the years in parallel with the UN’s greater engagement in stabilising areas of crisis. The United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB) in Brindisi has been recognised the status of “Global Service Centre” (GSC) within the UN’s new logistics support strategy, the so-called “Global Field Support Strategy” (GFSS). It provides logistics support to all UN operations, hosts the UN satellite communication centre and provides vocational training also for managing the environmental impact of UN operations.

The United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Brindisi is managed by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and started its operations on June 1, 2000, after having moved its operations from Pisa in order to be able to exploit a larger facility in its mission to support needy populations through humanitarian aid. The Depot is part of a network comprising five logistic bases – in addition to Brindisi, also in Ghana, Dubai, Panama and Malaysia – whose aim is to assist the populations of countries hit by natural disasters or complex emergencies, thus enhancing the international community’s response capacity by repositioning relief supplies and delivering them in the areas affected. The Base is capable of delivering relief supplies in 24-48 hours in any part of the world.

Founded in 1964, it is the first international research centre created in the city of Trieste at the proposal of the Nobel Prize Laureate Abdus Salam.
