Syria “is central in our activity, but our views on the solution of the crisis differ in two ways from those of Damascus”. The point was explained by Maurizio Massari, Minister Giulio Terzi’s new Special Envoy for the countries of the Mediterranean and the Arab Spring. Massari was speaking in a radio interview on RAI’s GR1 news programme.
“We need to reflect some more on the timing and arrangements for me to visit Syria; we need to find the right messag” for the Syrian authorities”, said Massari. The Envoy was replying to a question on the outcome of his first meeting with the Syrian Ambassador in Italy, with whom, he said “We have two different views on how to resolve the crisis”.
The Special Envoy has a packed diary: next week sees his first engagements in Morocco and Algeria, followed by the other countries of North Africa: Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. He will then embark on a second round of visits dedicated to the Middle East peace process, with meetings in Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Lebanon.
