Albania: Terzi is confident that Tirana will obtain EU candidate status

“I have great confidence that Albania will obtain EU candidate status”. These were the words of Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi after his meeting at the Foreign Ministry with Edmond Haxhinasto, the Albanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. “I hope that the European Council in May, which will be focusing on this question will see concrete progress and have a decisive outcome”.

Terzi noted that Tirana “is nearing its destination” as far as the reforms required by the European Commission are concerned, “in terms of parliamentary regulations, procedures and the electoral law currently being drawn up”.

The Albanian Minister pointed out that, for Tirana, Italy is a “strategic partner” and expressed his thanks for our country’s support for Albania’s progress towards Europe. He went on to describe as “fantastic” the work being done by the Monti Government, “whose work of stabilising the markets has positive implications for the Balkans too”.

During their meeting the two Ministers also touched on regional and bilateral issues, above all in the sphere of “economic collaboration that can bear fruit in an economy such as Albania’s, which is experiencing strong growth”, explained Terzi.
