Cooperation: Egypt – food security for the most vulnerable

Italy is engaged in projects to foster Egypt’s economic and social development through actions to improve food security and nutritional quality for the most vulnerable segments of the population.

Agreement worth 3 million dollars

The Italian Ambassador, Claudio Pacifico, has signed a food security agreement on “Improving Household and Nutrition Security” with the Egyptian Agricultural Minister for Agriculture, Mohamed Reda Ismail, and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation Representative, Moujahed Achouri. The agreement is worth around 3 million dollars and follows on from commitments undertaken through the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Italian Republic and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt for a new partnership for development. The Agreement was signed in Rome in May 2010.

Italy-Egypt: 4 important agreements in a month

The agreement is a new and important testimony to Italy’s close relations with Egypt in this delicate transition period. In just one month it has translated into the signing of a further 4 important agreements that will pave the way for development cooperation programmes with a high economic and social impact for that country. The overall commitment envisages high social impact projects in Egypt worth around 150 million dollars.

Minister Reda thanked Italy for its support in the difficult transition stage with projects designed to meet the essential needs of the Egyptian people. In this light, the Minister underscored the numerous initiatives implemented by Italy in the sector of agricultural collaboration. These have supported Egypt in its process of modernisation and coming into line with European quality standards, including through training and education initiatives.
