SOCIAL-MEDIA: a great vehicle for freedom, says Terzi

Linked from New York, where he was participating in the UN General Assembly, the minister spoke at the Social Media Week session on armed conflict and social-media, underscoring how these instruments were to be used responsibly.

According to Minister Giulio Terzi, who spoke by video link (from New York, where he is participating in the UN General Assembly) at the Social Media Week session “Armed Conflict and Social Media”, thanks to their “global reach, diffusion and ability to erase the distances between countries”, the social media are a great vehicle for freedom, a place where information and ideas can go through unfiltered” and, “if used in a responsible way, can be a formidable tool for promoting democracy”. An important instrument of “freedom that must respect the dignity of the thoughts of others and must never be a tool of aggression – not even verbal – but a place for dialogue: a vast international agora”, of “immense value to Italian foreign policy”, the minister continued, recalling that for “many months I too have been using it”. “I have tried to encourage all the ministry’s personnel, all the men and women who serve their country daily around the world, to enter the social media circuit”, Terzi pointed out.
