Acting on Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi’s instructions, Italian Development Cooperation has sent a new consignment of humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees to the Syrian-Turkish border.
“The humanitarian emergency caused by the conflict”, underscored Terzi, “continues to be extremely serious and the conditions of the Syrian people, who are paying an unacceptable price, are the constant focus of our very concrete efforts”. Italy is the second European donor for 2013, with 22 million euros earmarked in addition to the 7.5 million allocated thus far.
The containers, with 60 tons of essential supplies, food and medical kits, all of which necessary for the survival of the refugees, reached their destination in the late evening of Tuesday 19 February. In distributing the supplies, women and children will be the priority. A further delivery of powdered milk will be distributed in the next few days in Syria itself, under medical supervision.
Italian Development Cooperation has engaged in numerous other humanitarian operations in recent weeks in Lebanon, Jordan and Damascus itself. Essential supplies, a field hospital, and medical and sanitary products were provided for victims of the conflict.
