Italy is in the forefront in efforts to protect and enhance the Bamiyan historic site, having signed an agreement with the Afghan Ministry of Culture and UNESCO for a 1.2 million-dollar project for the conservation of the Shar-i-Gholgholah Islamic citadel, along with capacity-building activities aimed at the better administration of cultural patrimony and control of illegal trafficking in archaeological remains.
