Open Doors at the Farnesina

The Farnesina Palace will open its doors to the public on 14 June 2013.

“Open Doors at the Farnesina” is the title of the annual event by which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs meets the public, and is part of a mission to promote its art collections both in Italy and abroad. An opportunity for direct dialogue with citizens, to render its institutional activities transparent, to illustrate the building and its collections’ illustrious history and to transform a public space into a benefit shared by all.

Astrattoby Gastone Novelli on loan from the National Gallery of Modern Art

A 1964 tapestry by Gastone Novelli (Vienna 1925-Milan 1968) entitled Astratto, on loan from Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art, will be on display in the “Salone d’Onore”, in perfect harmony with another of the artist’s tapestry masterpieces L’albero meraviglioso con i suoi frutti e fiori, which is owned by the foreign ministry and hangs in the “Anticamera degli Ambasciatori”.

Astratto was originally produced by the Arazzeria Scassa of Asti for the interior of the SS Michelangelo ocean liner. This loan falls within the broader scope of the foreign ministry’s promotion of the artists of the Farnesina Collection, in an effort to develop more fruitful exchanges with other cultural institutions equally committed to the advancement of Italian modern art.
