A conference entitled Window on Yemen will be held in Urbino on 9 and 10 October, organised by the foreign ministry and the University of Urbino’s inter-departmental “Europe and others” research centre (CREA). The event will be a political-diplomatic as well as a cultural one as a result both of the level of its participants and of the moment in which it is taking place.
Major leaders in national dialogue meeting in Urbino
The meeting will follow close upon the conclusion of the National Dialogue for political transition now under way in Sana’a, and many of the major participants in that dialogue (policy makers, youth movement activists, diplomats and intellectuals), as well as members of the strategic think tanks of various nations will be present in Urbino. Italy has an especially active role in promoting the Friends of Yemen group that are helping to facilitate the transition.
The conference will open with welcome addresses by Yemeni ambassador to Italy Khaled Abdulrahman Al Akwa and dean of the University of Urbino Stefano Pivato. Other key speakers will include former Yemeni premier Abdul Karim Al Iryani and Nobel laureate Tawakkul Karman. The sessions will be jointly coordinated by the foreign ministry’s Deputy Director for the Middle East, Gulf and Mediterranean Giuseppe Giliberti and former Italian ambassador to Yemen Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte.
