340 Libyan troops in Italy for training

Within the framework of the Italian government’s efforts in support of Libya, and in keeping with Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidane’s pledges in the margins of the Lough Erne G8 regarding the reconstruction of the Libyan armed forces, the first 14-week training cycle of began, under the aegis of the Defence Ministry, at the 80th volunteer training regiment of Cassino (FR) for 340 Libyan troops. The course is the next logical step in the activities already begun in Libya with the assistance of Italian instructors.


Italy determined to support Libyan transition


The first phase began in Tripoli in November with the selection of approximately 500 soldiers by a team of Italian military experts working in tandem with the Libyan authorities. The training that will take place in Italy will be focused at platoon and infantry levels. With the arrival of the 340 troops here, Italy confirms its determined commitment to support the transition and stabilisation of Libya through an organic and system-based approach. Complementary to security training activities are a series of interventions in the area of public administration, as well as initiatives intended to foster economic recovery and differentiation that can be carried out and developed in collaboration with Italian firms already present in Libya.
