Jordan: new EBRD funding
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development recently granted Jordan the status of “recipient” country and launched various operations there. The most important of these concerns100 million USD in financing for a new 240-MW IPP4 Al-Manakher electrical power plant to be built 15 kilometres from the capital. Others concern 80 million USD in financing for the Abdali Retail and Entertainment Centrein the residential area of Abdali in Amman (a project begun before the 2008-2009 crisis and recently resumed),in addition to 65 million USD, divided between two accords with as many credit institutions (30 and 35 million), to provide a financial instrument in support of international and inter-regional commerce, and 4 million USD recently earmarked for the Microfund for Women. In addition to these projects, approximately 50 million USD has been allotted for HIKMA Pharmaceuticals, a Jordanian-owned firm quoted on the London stock exchange. The EBRD intervention aims to support a project for the enlargement of 3 recently-acquired plants located in Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia with a specific focus on energy efficiency measures, which is one of the EBRD’s top priorities.
