Valensise, Egypt key to area stability

“I delivered the Egyptian authorities Minister Bonino’s invitation to participate in the international conference on Libya being organised by the foreign ministry for 6 March”, reported Secretary General of the MFA Ambassador Michele Valensise at the end of a two-day mission to Egypt, where he had a busy agenda of meetings. Valensise added that he was met with “great appreciation for the invitation and satisfaction with Italy’s confirmation of Egypt as key to the stability of the Mediterranean and the Middle East”.

Transition and human rights

The Secretary General also underscored that “the Cairo authorities are intent on completing the political transition by the end of summer and acknowledged Italy’s keen expectation that, on the basis of the newly approved constitution, it will proceed in full respect of fundamental rights and freedoms”.

Room for stronger Italian business presence

Valensise pointed out that Egypt “has expressed deep interest in developing closer collaboration with Italy. We had fruitful discussions on bilateral themes and the regional situation. There is ample room for reinforcing the presence of Italian businesses in Egypt that go hand in hand with the country’s stabilisation”.
