Fashion: The need to defend Italian identity (Armani)
Giorgio Armani called for the more decisive intervention of the Chamber of Fashion to protect Italian creativity, and criticised the fashion show calendar. According to the designer, “The Chamber of Fashion must defend the Italian culture and identity without looking at what they are doing in France, or here or there, if it intends to make fashion Italy’s banner in the world”. “Today, the last day of Fashion Week”, the designer went on, “there wasn’t another Italian name alongside mine: I was the only important designer. So there were those who got on a plane and flew to Paris (referring to Vogue editor Anna Wintour). That’s how we protect fashion? Where is the Chamber of Fashion? As I came in I’ll go out, a phone call would be enough”. Jane Reeve, CEO of the Chamber of Fashion, promised a review of the calendars of future fashion shows. In the margins of the show for the presentation of the Autumn/Winter women’s wear collections, Giorgio Armani also urged the fashion world to make the shows more “functional” and to present more wearable collections.
