The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, is concerned about respect for human rights since the two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, have been detained in India for too long. Her views were reported today by her spokesperson, Rupert Corville, after her meeting with the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Benedetto Della Vedova.
Violation of human rights
Della Vedova said that High Commissioner Pillay acknowledged that the marines’ case displayed elements of a violation of human rights. “She expressed a commitment to examine these elements in the United Nations”, Della Vedova told journalists after meeting Pillay. “I think this is an important statement because we need to consider the existence of a violation of human rights. The restrictions on the two marines’ freedom of movement have been in place for two years without any charge being brought against them or the case coming to court”, he concluded.
