“Solidarity and support for the Italian community, and convinced support for the resumption of dialogue between government and democratic opposition to bring the country our of this pressing crisis”, asserted Under-Secretary Mario Giro in a briefing before the Senate Foreign Affairs Commission on his recent Caracas mission. Giro reported that, with all probability, the opposition, which cited its satisfaction with the contacts undertaken, would announce the official opening of peace talks this week.
Italy’s role
The under-secretary also underscored the role that Italy could play in facilitating and encouraging a dialogue in which, according to Giro, both government and opposition were aware that this was the only way to end the violence and manage what is also an economic crisis whose negative effects are being felt across the country’s entire social fabric. Giro reported having met with many members of the Italian community to express Italy’s commitment to and support for them.
